Physical activity and mental disorder symptoms
To understand the role of physical exercise in improving the mental state of MS patients, the researchers examined 54 women, aged 34, suffering from MS. The women were divided into three separate groups – one group took up yoga sessions, the other took up aquatic exercises and the third one did not take up any exercise. The researchers gave a questionnaire to each participant to know about their symptoms before and after their participation in the clinical trial.
At the end of the eight-week program of yoga and aquatic exercises, it was observed that the women who were members of these two groups showed a marked improvement in their symptoms, compared to the control group. Moreover, those who participated in a weekly training program saw a significant decline in several other MS symptoms such as fatigue, depression and paresthesia. Apparently, the likelihood of depression was found to increase by 35 times in women who were included in the non-exercise group, compared to those who were engaged in yoga or aquatic exercise.
The researchers said that yoga and exercise can be a panacea for a large number of mental health conditions. According to them, “Exercise training programs should be considered in the future as possible complements to standard MS treatments.”
