Can journaling help in reducing depression?

Journaling is one of the best ways to deal with depression and other related maladies. Interestingly, writing a journal has a positive effect on both physical and mental health of an individual. One can record his or her daily activities, thoughts, feelings and interactions with others in a diary as an effective stress relief exercise.  A person can write anything and everything, ranging from one’s thoughts and fears to one’s reactions to the events of a particular day.  Precisely, journaling helps a person become more confident by providing a useful insight into how one’s sees oneself and the world around him or her.

Writing a journal imparts a sense of self-satisfaction

Maintaining a journal acts as a vent for a person’s piled up emotions or feelings that he or she is unable to express otherwise. Writing about one’s life can help a person find meaning and purpose in life. It can, in fact, help one realize and acknowledge the thoughts prevailing in the subconscious mind and understand them vividly. Among other things, writing a diary can be a good stress buster as it lets an individual put on paper all the worries, stresses and tensions, thereby helping him or her to reflect on the journey of life and the choices made during critical situations.

However, the best part about journaling is that all one needs is a pen and a paper to attain the sense of satisfaction. It has been observed that people are more comfortable penning down their thoughts on paper rather than speaking about them.  Journaling can be an effective way to learn from the mistakes and heal one’s life, provided one is honest and true to oneself while writing the journal.

Keeping a journal is an effective way to cope with depression

During depression, people want to express themselves and communicate their fears openly, however, at times, the near and dear ones cannot understand what they are up to. Here is where writing a diary comes to help. The best part is that one can write anything and everything in the diary, without the fear of sharing his or her private information with an outsider.

However, if one, still, finds the task of diary writing very daunting, he or she can stick to 15 minutes of writing, and then, gradually increase the writing time and frequency of the posts.

“Keeping a journal is a good way to start coping with depression,” according to Late Jessie Gruman, Ph.D., founder of the Center for the Advancement of Health, in Washington. “It’s not aggressive, it’s something you can do by yourself, and it gives you the chance to see your feelings in black and white and then make plans to do something about them,” she added.

Although writing a diary may not seem like an effective option in the beginning, however, if one sticks to it and makes entries regularly, he or she may be able to deal with the depression in an effective way.
